Professional development eventsCsChE U of T student chapter hosts numerous events throughout the years to advance students' understanding of the discipline and their future careers.
Some of our most anticipated activities include the annual CSChE Conference, Sector Night, Prof-Student mixer and the PEY mentorship program which are showcased below. Please check our calendar for more information and to see other upcoming events. |

Professional Experience Mentorship Program
The ‘Professional Experience Mentorship Program’ is a recently introduced year-long initiative that was created to build meaningful relationships between undergraduate students who are interested in participating in the PEY program and those currently on PEY or have been in the past.
This program primarily attracts second and third year students who are seeking guidance from experienced undergraduates for their PEY journey. The focus is to aid these students throughout the application process and ease the transition between academia and industry. Furthermore, students get access to our Chem-Eng PEY Database + interview tips and tricks. |
CSChE Annual Conference (CCEC)
Each year, our chapter provides our students with the opportunity to attend the annual Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference. Aside from the student competitions, our delegates and executives show great participation in workshops and use the Conference as an opportunity to engage and network with other engineering students from across Canada.
This past year, the University of Toronto was represented by a record-breaking 30 student delegates who attended the conference in Calgary, up 130% from last year and 300% from the last pre-pandemic CCEC. Our delegates participated in and excelled at the student competitions, with one of our students (Amogh Manivannan) placing 2nd in the Robert G. Auld Student Paper Competition. |
Plant Tour
The CSChE Chapter hosted 2 plant tours prior to 2022: one at the Steam Whistle Brewing and the second at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. The Steam Whistle Tour is a regular tour we have in which students can observe the brewing process of Steam Whistle and get to see Process Engineering concepts in action, all while enjoying free samples of beer. During the Toronto Rehabilitation tour students are able to see first-hand what researchers are working on and the new cutting-edge technology emerging into the biomedical field. After the formal tour, students are free to ask questions and revisit any research areas.

Sector Info Night
Each year we invite alumni from the Chemical Engineering Department to speak with current undergraduates about their careers and how studying chemical engineering at U of T has helped them in their professional endeavours. We invited alumni speakers from diverse professional backgrounds in 2023 with around 20 students attending and gaining profound knowledge of the industry. The event started with each speaker giving a brief introduction of their current role and how their chemical engineering degree helped them get there. This was followed by a series of panel questions and a networking session for the students.

Research Days
Students attend Research Days to gain knowledge about the topics of research professors are currently working on in the faculty. At the end of the session, there is also a networking opportunity where students are able to speak to professors and discuss aspects of their research. This event provided a chance for students to contact professors for summer research positions and undergraduate thesis opportunities with this year having the highest attendance of around 90 students and 6 professors who showcased their incredible research! |
Chem Week
Every year, CSChE organizes a week packed full of events called Chem Week. This week is dedicated to celebrating the chemical engineering community, balancing social programming with academic and professional development-focused events. Listed below are some of the events that we ran during this week.
Element of the Day-During Chem Week, we decorate the common room with an element as the theme each day to celebrate the spirit of chemical engineering. In the past, we selected Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Calcium (Ca), Tin (Sn) and Uranium (U). These decorations included covering the common room with food, candy and posters to highlight the different products in which these elements can be found in.
Graduate-Undergraduate Student Mixer-As a tradition, CSChE partners with the Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Association (CEGSA) during Chem Week to provide undergraduate students with a chance to talk to graduate students about post-graduate studies and the opportunities and choices available in academia. Students gained valuable insight into graduate school admissions, the pressures of research, and the rewards of continuing their education.
Troost Cup- The ‘Troost Cup’ is a leadership and community building oriented event sponsored by the Troost family (current owners of Peel Plastics) and facilitated by CSChE executives. The primary goal of this event is to promote and encourage leadership development within the Chemical Engineering undergraduate student body.

PEY-Student Mixer
The PEY Student Mixer provides students who may be considering PEY placements to network with upper year students who have returned from or are currently completing a 12-16 month PEY work term. Many students planning on participating in the PEY co-op program are nervous about finding opportunities and do not know what to expect from employers. This event allows students to hear first-hand experiences about internships in sectors and at companies that may be of interest to them. Around 50 students took part in 2023-24 mixer which was held at a local pub.

Professor-Student Mixer
This event continues to be a popular one amongst students, and so we host a much awaited one in the Fall semester. This event provides a platform for students to communicate with their professors in an intimate and friendly environment. It also provides an opportunity for first year students to meet their would-be and future professors. Around 40 students attended and feedback was highly positive from both students and professors.
A trivia game was held as an ice-breaker, which showed the competitive side of students and professors alike. Students said that this event allowed them to connect with their professors in a non-academic setting and provided them with a better understanding of the research and experience of our esteemed faculty. Professors also enjoy this event since they were given a chance outside their lectures to speak with students about the current industry and how it related to their research. |
Candy Grams
Every year during Valentine’s Day, it is tradition for CSChE to make and sell candy grams to the chemical engineering community. We run this initiative to bring the student body together with some light-hearted chemical engineering puns and a side of sweets.
Valentine card messages were hand-written by CSChE executive members, Hershey’s chocolate was attached, and the candy grams were distributed to students during class hours. This year, CSChE was able to sell more than 230 candy grams to students across all years. Take part next year to find out if your chemistry is 100% <3. |
